Description

This dissertation navigates theatre and performance studies, contemporary visual art, embodied practice, and critical memory studies. Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is one of the researched sites, and the author worked there from 2007-2014 for women's shelters and the Vancouver Women's Health Collective. Methodologically, the dissertation includes conversational interviews with artists and community activists, personal observations, archival research, and site visit analyses. It acknowledges the persistent presence of past violence, colonial and otherwise, engaging with the traces left by historical and ongoing acts of violence and disappearance, and explores the complex ways these forces shape our understanding of the present.
